Winter’s Bone (2010)
This film, directed by Debra Granik and made Lawrence a star when she was only 20, is still her best. It is a drama that shows how natural her acting style is and builds up to a scary ending. Lawrence plays Ree, a young woman in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri who needs to find her missing father. Ree’s father is a violent criminal who put up their shabby property as bail but isn’t showing up for his court date, putting Ree and the rest of the family in trouble. At one point, she thinks about joining the army, and you can see how this strong woman would make a great soldier (like the one she plays in Causeway). Lawrence is great as Ree because she is smart, has a plan, and has real moral grit.
